QualityThe quality of research is notoriously difficult to define and to judge. Many organisations and individuals make judgements as part of their daily work and have developed approaches to the task. Purposes vary - from selecting projects for funding, to assessing the worth of evidence for decision-making. The methods and criteria used inevitably vary too.Committee on Research in Education (CORE) The Center for Education (CFE) of the National Research Council has undertaken a two-year project to promote improvements in scientific education research. Building on the work of the Committee on Scientific Principles in Education Research, the Committee on Research in Education is convening a series of workshops will explore several of the issues treated in the National Research Council’s report Scientific Research in Education in more depth. ESRC - National Centre for Research Methods The University of Southampton will be the co-ordinating hub for the new ESRC National Centre for Research Methods. The overall mission of the Centre will be to provide a strategic focal point for the identification, development and delivery of an integrated national research and training programme aimed at promoting a step change in the quality and range of methodological skills and techniques used by the UK. Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) The Economic and Social Research Council funds research in several distinct categories - grants, programmes and fellowships for example. ESRC's website contains advice on quality in an application for a research grant. Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) To judge the quality of research, the Higher Education Funding Council for England periodically organises a Research Assessment Exercise . This link leads to the assessment criteria it uses. Research Assessment Exercise 2008 The four UK higher education funding bodies have agreed the framework and timing of the next RAE. General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) The General Teaching Council for England is committed to becoming an evidence-based organisation and is gathering evidence through research. It has drafted a set of research criteria to guide its research activity. Department for Education and Skills (DfES) The Department for Education and Skills organises a large research programme.
