Priorities
Research in England is undertaken according to priorities established by each funding organisation separately. Some degree of coordination is achieved through communication between major funders. Greater coherence in setting priorities to enable separate projects to complement or build upon one another calls for the development of priority setting systems and the establishment of widely agreed priorities.
Establishing priority issues in the policy and practice of education is an important first step. Determining priorities for research and development from these would be the next important step.

Related NERF projects
NERF Priorities Sub-Group Report
The National Education Research Forum set up a sub-group in 2000 to discuss research prioritisation. The group was chaired by Carol Adams of the General Teaching Council for England.
NERF National Consultation on Education Priorities
In 2002 the National Educational Research Forum carried out a national consultation on education priorities.
Education Priorities Group
In 2002, The National Educational Research Forum set up the Education Priorities Group, chaired by Professor Charles Desforges. The group's remit is to develop a toolkit that organisations can use to help them prioritise.

Establishing Educational Research Priorities Project
In early 2004, the Establishing Educational Research Priorities project was set up. Working closely with seven educational organisations, NERF aims to explore the processes by which priorities are established. The purpose of this project is to both enhance the research priority-setting processes of the organisations involved and to develop generalisable understanding of the process for the public.
As part of the first phase of this project, representatives of the seven organisations involved met in spring 2004 to discuss issues around setting priorities. Read the workshop report.
