Sources of Funding

Funding organisations in the UK: Information on kind of work funded and criteria for funding

The following provides information on funding organisations which currently fund some aspect of education research in England (and in some cases in the UK). Some of these organisations fund unsolicited applications, others only fund competitively tendered and commissioned work. Information is provided on the type of research funded and where appropriate, how and when applications should be submitted. In all cases more information on funding procedures should be sought directly from the organisation. 

Arts Council England

Funding available through competitively tendered and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

Grants available for individuals, arts organisations, national touring and other people who use the arts in their work, whether their normal activity is arts related or not. Funding for activities that benefit people in England or that help artists and arts organisations from England to carry out their work.

Basic criteria for funding



  • Work is arts related
  • Takes place mainly in England
  • Is of benefit to the public
  • Does not duplicate existing work
  • Is under £30,000
How and when to apply

By application form, with written proposal sent through post only (no emailed or faxed versions).
Between 1st April and 31st December.

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

Funding available through competitive tendering process and unsolicited proposals.

Kind of research funded

Research into arts, education, social welfare and Anglo-Portuguese cultural relations. Limit of £10,000 per application.

Basic criteria for funding

Research must fit into current Foundation priorities. For education, the 2003 priorities are:

  • Helping schools, helping parents
  • Out of school services
  • The arts included
How and when to apply

Applications considered 3 times a year (March July and November).

Centre for British Teachers

Funding available through unsolicited proposals.

Kind of research funded

Action research with widespread policy and practical implications, addressing areas of defined importance in present-day education as well as tying in with CfBT's interest. In particular:

  • Provision of schooling
  • Focus on disadvantage
  • Managing and delivering effective learning and teaching
  • Communication, language and multilingualism
Basic criteria for funding

  • Is of importance to present day education
  • Supports CfBT's primary aims
  • Has strong clear ideas of dissemination
  • Is of value to policy and practice as well as users
How and when to apply

Staged application procedure. Outline of proposal considered by R&D manager. If considered appropriate full application form then completed.
Applications considered quarterly.

Department for Education and Skills

Funding available through competitive tendering process and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

Education research in general, covered by the department's current aims and objectives. In particular:

  • Motivation for participation and success in education
  • Improving outcomes for different groups in education
  • Impact of different forms of education on individuals and economy
Basic criteria for funding

Fits into the Department's current priorities, aims and objectives (see 'Education and Skills: Delivery Results - A Strategy to 2006').

How and when to apply

Applications invited throughout the year.

Economic and Social Research Council

Funding available through competitive tendering process and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

Education and Social Science research. Funding available for organisations, individuals and for postgraduate training.
Basic, strategic and applied research is funded.

Basic criteria for funding

Research fits into current priority areas:

  • Economic Performance and Development
  • Environment and Human Behaviour
  • Governance and Citizenship
  • Knowledge, Communication and Learning
  • Lifecourse, Lifestyles and Health
  • Social Stability and Exclusion
  • Work and Organisations
How and when to apply

Research grants, fellowship schemes and annual Research Seminars Competition are all advertised. See website and national press for more details.

Esmee Fairbairn Foundation

Funding available through competitive tendering process and unsolicited proposals.

Kind of research funded

Education research.

Current areas of interest for funding:

  • Early years provision
  • School exclusion
  • Adult education for return learners
  • Professional development for leaders in education
Unsolicited and tendered work funded.

Basic criteria for funding

Research must:

  • Have practical impact on policy and/or practice
  • Be original
  • Not be funded by other sources

Gatsby Charitable Organisation

Funding available through competitive tendering process and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

A wide range of research funded. Research and projects in 'technical education', 'disadvantaged children' and 'economic and social research'.

Basic criteria for funding

Projects must aim to make life better for people, in particular those that are disadvantaged.

How and when to apply

Applications for tendered work invited at various times throughout the year. See website for further details.

Joseph Rountree Foundation

Funding available through competitive tendering process.

Kind of research funded

Social Science research that does not receive public money from elsewhere.

Basic criteria for funding

How and when to apply

Tendered projects funded at various times throughout the year.

Leverhulme Trust
http://www.leverhulme.org.uk

Funding available through unsolicited proposals.

Kind of research funded

Covers all areas in research and education apart from school education.

Basic criteria

Proposed work must be:

  • Original
  • Significant
  • Able to judge and take appropriate risks
In addition projects which remove barriers between traditional disciplines are favoured. Applicants must indicate why they believe the Trust to be the correct recipient for their bid.

Lifelong Learning Foundation

Funding available through competitive tendering process and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

Research into Lifelong learning, covering all major types and contexts of learning: formal and informal, vocational, institutional, community and family-oriented. Only fund 'projects', not organisations or individuals.

Key areas of interest are:

  • Developing a national curriculum suited to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century
  • Assessment strategies consistent with the skills and values of lifelong learning
  • Information, advice and particularly guidance for learners throughout life
  • Pedagogies for learning
  • "Brain" research and learning science
Basic Criteria for funding

  • Research is original and radical
  • Outcomes are practically applicable

Nuffield Foundation

Funding available through competitive tendering process and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

Education and social science research funded. Most larger grants are for applied research.

Basic criteria for funding

  • Meets charity's aims
  • In particular, advances social well-being

Sutton Trust

Funding available through competitive tendering process and commissioned work.

Kind of research funded

Organisations only funded, not individuals.
Current priorities are:

  • Research into alternative methods of assessment, in particular those that test aptitude/ability rather than educational experience
  • Qualitative research into the experiences of under-represented groups in HE, and those involved in the application process such as teachers and staff
  • School and university selection policies
  • University intake and benchmarks
  • Practical impact evaluation of schemes and policy investigation
  • Early Years (0-3) looking at the stimulation of early mental development
Basic criteria for funding

Research must be consistent with the overall aims of the Trust:

  • to provide education opportunities for people from non-privileged backgrounds, and the breakdown of access and quality barriers based upon non-academic factors
How and when to apply

The Trust recommends sending a brief outline of project proposal before formally applying (this can also be done over the telephone). See website for specific details of how to apply and what to include in application. Applications are ongoing.

Wellcome Trust

Kind of research funded

Education and health research.

Basic criteria for funding

In particular the Trust funds research and activities that:

  • Stimulate public interest in science
  • Inform and facilitate public debate on science and its application
  • Improve understanding of the social, ethical, historical and cultural context of science
How and when to apply

Applications invited throughout the year via 'application workshops'. See website for further details.
