Physical Science and Maths Working Group
In 2005 NERF set up two working groups to explore what integrated R&D programmes aimed at tackling major educational problems might look like. One, chaired by John Wood, CEO of the Council for the Central Laboratories Research Council, focuses on Physical Science and Maths Education.
The starting point for the working group was the skill shortages facing technical sectors of the economy over the medium to long term. The main hypothesis is that weaknesses in the education system are contributing significantly to the shortage and that the 11- 14 phase is particularly critical.
The working group started with the knowledge that many reviews have been undertaken and reports written and does not intend to add another to the pile! The findings of these will be taken into account. However, the problems are still with us and there is little evidence of a significant reversal of the teacher supply problem. The view, initially at least, is that tinkering with existing structures will not be sufficient- radical alternatives need to be considered.
The final report of the working group is available by clicking here
