Development Group

Purpose

NERF brought into being a virtual Development Group as part of its remit to encourage the development of a coherent strategy for educational research. Its purpose was to help the many organisations with responsibilities for developing the educational service to work together on how best use and organise research.

Membership

Members were leaders of research or its utilisation within the main national organisations concerned with service delivery in all phases of education.

Membership in April 2005 was (these links will open in a new window):

Adult Learning Inspectorate
BECTa
Centre of Excellence in Leadership
Department for Education and Skills
General Teaching Council for England
Higher Education Academy
Learning and Skills Council
Learning and Skills Development Agency
Ofsted
Qualifications and Curriculum Authority
Training and Development Agency for Schools
QAA

Ways of working

A novel feature of the group was its largely virtual nature.  Its mode of operation was based on email consultation about opportunities to work collaboratively on research effectiveness and utilisation. The group:

• Identified issues on which organisations could work together
• Initiated collaborative developmental projects
• Set up workshops, seminars or training events on topics of interest to a number of organisations

The virtual Development Group built on a number of developmental projects and events set up by NERF with organisations on an ad hoc basis, with interested groups joining as they heard about them.
